Bands of red, ochre, and pale violet clay ripple across the slopes, creating an almost otherworldly backdrop — a place where nature and history meet in silence. These hills are part of the Iori Plateau, which borders Azerbaijan and surrounds the ancient monastery carved into sandstone cliffs. David Gareja, founded in the 6th century by the monk David of Gareji, is not only a spiritual site but a testament to centuries of monastic life in extreme solitude. Monks once lived in rock-cut cells along these hillsides, far from towns and cities, their lives marked by simplicity, reflection, and the harsh beauty of the land.
