The Barrio Santa Cruz is the oldest neighborhood in Alicante that has been around since the first settlers arrived in Alicante. It is inhabited by the Greeks, the Romans, the Moors and the Christians. It is named after the 18th-century chapel that overlooks the streets of the district. It was traditionally a dock workers' quarter, the houses are all relatively small, there was never a palace or even a garden. One of the oldest and most spiritual streets is called Carrer de San Anton where there is a niche with an image of the saint where girls came to ask him for a friend or a cure for a sick loved one. 'La Hermandad' or The Brotherhood' of the Holy Cross, is an organization first founded by the Bishop of Orihuela-Alicante.

Every year on Holy Wednesday before Easter, the oldest neighborhood of Alicante is decked out for a procession by the Brotherhood to look exceptional. The large religious sculptures, are carried by local porters from the chapel of Santa Cruz to the Cathedral of St. Nicholas. Other cities in Spain have very similar Easter traditions like this one, but since the crisis, many places have struggled to find enough porters to carry the thrones. This is not a problem for the Santa Cruz neighborhood and there is never a shortage of bearers, a title that traditionally passes from parent to child. The ritual is particularly special in Santa Cruz because of the narrow, winding streets and steep stairs that must be descended with these enormous weights to carry and it draws visitors from all over the world who come to marvel at the spectacle. The 'Our Lady of the sorrows' - Virgen de los Dolores carried by women and 'Captive Christ', carried by young porters. Opposite the Basilica of St Mary of Alicante, in honor of the 1917-2017 Centenary of Brotherhood of Holy Cross, an illustration has been made on painted ceramic tiles of Christ, Virgen de los Dolores and San Juan de La Palma.

De Barrio Santa Cruz is de oudste wijk in Alicante die al bestaat sinds de eerste kolonisten in Alicante arriveerden. Het is bewoond door de Grieken, de Romeinen, de Moren en de christenen. Het is vernoemd naar de 18e-eeuwse kapel die uitkijkt over de straten van de wijk. Het was van oudsher een wijk voor havenarbeiders, de huizen zijn allemaal relatief klein, er was nooit een paleis of zelfs maar een tuin. Eén van de oudste en meest spirituele straten heet Carrer de San Anton waar een nis is met een afbeelding van de heilige waar meisjes hem kwamen vragen om een vriend of een remedie voor een zieke geliefde. 'La Hermandad' of The Brotherhood of the Holy Cross, is een organisatie die voor het eerst werd opgericht door de bisschop van Orihuela-Alicante. Elk jaar op Heilige Woensdag voor Pasen, wordt de buurt door de Broederschap voor een processie uitgedost om er uitzonderlijk uit te zien. De 'tronen', grote religieuze sculpturen, worden door lokale dragers van de kapel van Santa Cruz naar de kathedraal van St. Nicolaas gedragen. Andere steden in Spanje hebben zeer vergelijkbare paastradities zoals deze, maar sinds de crisis hebben veel plaatsen moeite om genoeg dragers te vinden om de tronen te dragen. Dit is geen probleem voor de wijk Santa Cruz en er is nooit een tekort aan dragers, een titel die traditioneel van ouder op kind gaat. Het ritueel is bijzonder bijzonder in Santa Cruz vanwege de smalle, kronkelende straatjes en steile trappen die met deze enorme gewichten moeten worden afgedaald om te dragen en het trekt bezoekers van over de hele wereld die zich komen verwonderen over het spektakel. De troon 'Christ of Faith' is gemaakt door de beroemde Spaanse beeldhouwer Luis Ortega Bru, wiens ouders werden doodgeschoten tijdens de oorlog en hijzelf zat in de gevangenis voor het helpen van de opstand, in 1964. Tegenover the Basilica of St Mary of Alicante zijn ten ere van Eeuwfeest 1917-2017 van dit Broederschap een illustratie gemaakt op geschilderde keramische tegels van Christus, Virgen de los Dolores en San Juan de La Palma.
