Yangon – formerly Rangoon remains Myanmar's largest and most commercially important city. Yangon is the country's largest city with a population of nearly six million. This city is a melting pot—a diversity of cultures and communities in terms of people, settlement and religions. The first thing we noticed was the large number of monks and nuns of all ages everywhere. Many families from poorer or more rural backgrounds take up the chance to send their child to be a monk or nun as it also means a free education. They eat, pray, become educated, play and live together, and for potentially decades they form a new family. Between the ages of ten and sixteen, most young Burmese men and some young women go to live in a monastery. While most young men remain at the monastery for only a short time before returning to the secular life, some become fully ordained monks. The female monsks given the name Thilashin in Myanmar are not regarded as full female equivalents of the monks: they are not Bhikkunis. Thilashin, which literally means owner of good moral conduct remain the only monastic options for women at this time. These nuns take a vow to keep the ten precepts, shave their heads, and wear their distinctive earthen-red or pink robes on entering the nunnery. Young boys are also wear pink robes in Mandalay. They go out on alms on certain days and receive uncooked rice or money.

Yangon is de voormalig hoofdstad van Myanmar. Het is voor de meeste reizigers het startpunt van hun rondreis door Myanmar. Voor de grootste stad van het land komt Yangon relatief relaxed over. Wanneer je reist door Myanmar kom je uiteraard in contact met het boeddhisme. Overal zie je de monniken, nonnen en pagodes. Ongeveer 89% van de bevolking is er aanhanger van het Theravada-boeddhisme. Over het algemeen worden monniken door de Boeddha aangemoedigd om wereldse aangelegenheden en passies achter zich te laten, zodat zij gemakkelijker in staat zijn een staat van vrede en wijsheid te bereiken, en sterke ongezonde emoties zoals haat, verlangen en lust te overwinnen. Ze scheren hun hoofd kaal, en dragen hun onderscheidende aarde-rood of roze gewaden. De jonge monniken krijgen ook rijst of geld voor de ochtend aalmoezen. Vroeg in de ochtend gaan ze de straat op. Veelal in korte ommegang, tamelijk dun gekleed en blootvoets - zelfs in koude bergdorpen. Hun optreden kent een ingestudeerde vorm: kaarsrecht lopen, volstrekt zwijgen, recht vooruit kijken, en in rap tempo doorstappen. Totdat iemand hen aanhoudt om eten te schenken. Zonder die iemand ook maar even aan te kijken, houdt de rij kort de pas in. Geen woord wordt gewisseld. Elke monnik opent de bedelnap, de gever schept het eten erin. Veelal witte rijst. Natuurlijk houdt de ommegang even de pas in, als ze uit hun ooghoeken een man of vrouw zien aansnellen. Natuurlijk kunnen de jonge monniken achteraan niet aldoor hun mond houden. En natuurlijk zitten sommigen van hen ’s avonds in het lokale theehuis te snacken en een Chinese gevechtsfilm te kijken.
