To stand the test of time - a photo on Flickriver

            The CB&Q was gone before my time and never ran within 300 miles of my home area. I suspect that is why my interest has been a slow burn developing over time, ultimately living across the street from the Mississippi River line. I do find the Q to be like quick sand drawing you in deeper and deeper the more you study it. It's among my favorite historical roads at this point. 

One of the things I really like about the Q is how there remain tell-tale signs of their routes so long after they passed into history. To summarize the best clue in a word, concrete. I haven't seen an explanation of why the Q used concrete in so many structures. I'm familiar with the concrete bridges around the system, the cast concrete milepost locations next to those bridges, and all the concrete signposts where other companies chose steel or wood. This was however is the first time I noticed an installation of concrete fence posts lining both sides of the right-of-way. Unmistakably Burlington. September 7, 2023.
