Smoke from a not-so-distant fire - a photo on Flickriver

            A volunteer fireman with the Bard-Endee Fire District uses a drip torch to burn the dry vegetation away from the boundary surrounding Russell's Travel Center in Glenrio, New Mexico this past Sunday evening (4-15-2018) while the high winds that have plagued the southern Plains in recent weeks are briefly calm.  

I spent most of the past week making round trips between Oklahoma and Santa Fe, New Mexico hauling a company's drilling trucks to a new school building site.  The winds have frequently been fierce and I've had to detour around some of the large grass fires that are now burning in Oklahoma.  Rain is forecast for much of the region in the form of showers and perhaps some storms, so there is hope that it will help bring some of these fires under control.  On the day of my last load from Devol, OK, it was 97 degrees, 7% humidity and a very stiff wind, conditions that are ideal for the spread of such fires.
