Art Gallery of Ontario hosted the exhibit Gulielmo Del Toro: At Home With Monsters in fall 2017, displaying art, artefacts, books and props from the filmmaker's personal collection. Several other images appear in the album: flic.kr/s/aHsmTzSayB

An activity station invited viewers to "Draw (or write) about your own monstrous side." Another instruction posted nearby suggested drawing an image from a nightmare. As a small child I had a recurring nightmare, so I drew it. I'm surprised at how well this hasty sketch captured the way I remembered the dream.

My description says in block capitals, "A Cat-in-the-Hat shadow peels open my eyes to see whether I'm asleep."

No doubt my mother unwittingly caused this by coming to check on me and kissing me on the forehead. The dream included terrifying music, which likely came from my father playing the piano downstairs.

I can still see the terrible white sclera and black pupil of the shadow's eye boring into my mind. The dream terrified me so that I piled stuffed animals over my head. They protected me. I vaguely remember my mother waking me and telling me not to put them on my face. Then I might have told her about the dream, and she might have stopped checking so closely. It's odd & funny & troubling to consider how a careful parent can become an intrusive monster.
