            Box Turtle Habitat, elevated observation deck and surrounding forested hiking trail at the Poarch Band of Creek Indians (PBCI) Magnolia Branch Wildlife Reserve (MBWR), near Atmore, in rural Escambia County, Alabama, on Sunday, April 6, 2014. The box turtle habitat was made possible by partnerships between PBCI, Department of the Interior (DOI) U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Alabama Forestry Commission, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources and Conservation Service (NRCS). MBWR is home to the PBCI box turtle habitat program. They have a penned spot where they put the box turtles to acclimate to the area and then turn them loose. They use the box turtles as educational tools by taking and showing them to groups.  An in-site education shelter allows PBCI foresters the ability to talk about what they are doing to help the box turtles. 

The PBCI leadership, along with and MBWR Manager and Tribal Elder Billy Smith, and USDA NRCS Tribal Liaison David Elliott work together to improve and preserve the Reserve.  NRCS Farm Bill conservation programs provide landowners with technical and financial assistance to implement conservation practices. Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) is just one of the programs that help landowners do this. 
The USDA through the NRCS has had a long history of successful program support of PBCI.  The Poarch Band are descendants of a segment of the original Creek Nation, which once covered almost all of Alabama and Georgia. Unlike many other eastern Indian tribes, the Poarch Creeks were not removed from their tribal lands and have lived together for almost 200 years in and around the reservation in Poarch, Alabama. The Poarch Band of Creek Indians is the only federally recognized Indian Tribe in the state of Alabama, operating as a sovereign nation with its own system of government and bylaws.
