Embroidered Binding - Bible: English Geneva Version (1608) University of Glasgow Library, Special Collections Sp Coll Euing Dp-i.2

            Canvas worked with polychrome silk threads and fine metal threads to create naturalistic representations of birds, and different species of flowers and fruit, all seemingly growing from the same miraculous bush/tree (alluding to the Tree of Life). The background is worked in  Ground Stitch with metal/silver threads, much of which has turned black due to oxidization over four centuries; however, it would have reflected candle-light when newly made. The stems have been made by using metal threads in Chain Stitch or Spiral Stitch and each stem enclosing a flower or fruit: the same design is depicted on both sides (but in mirror view).. At the top right hand side is possible a Calendula (Marigold family), with red apples or berries on the right.. Beneath them is possibly a Blue Borage Flower or a Blue Starry Hyacinth, and a strawberry. The next level depicts possibly a red/yellow/white Pansy and an unidentified bird, followed by possibly another Borage Flower or Blue Starry Hyacinth and a strawberry. At the base there is possibly another Calendula with red apples or berries.

The embroidered binding is mounted  on wooden boards, and sewn on three cords. The Bible has been printed on laid paper, and the fore-edge, top and bottom leaves have been gilded. The tail-end band is intact, with the head-end band missing, and there is evidence  of there having been textile fore-edge ties.
