Levitation seen at the UK National Physical Laboratory Open Day, May 2018

            I had heard of levitation done with superconductors and magnets but gentiles this day had never observed it in person.

The yellow puck, about an inch across, contains a small piece of superconducting matterial and a convenient reservoir for a small amount of liquid nitrogen to cool the superconductor down to its transition temperature (where it starts superconducting). Then it gaily floats up to an inch or so above the rare-earth magnets you can see below it. This was a very impressive demo, made all the more so by the clouds of cold gas and the moody lighting.
