40 083 & 081 at Newton Abbot on the RPPR 'Deltic to Devon & Cromptons to Cornwall' charter

            As can be judged from the tour title this Railway Pictorial Publications Railtour was booked a class 55 between Paddington and Newton Abbot in each direction (out via Yeovil and back via Taunton) but was substituted at the last minute by a pair of ER class 40s instead thanks to industrial action by fitters not fuelling or maintaining the EE Type 5s. The Cromptons by contrast did appear and 33 017 & 022 were employed for the leg to Par and back. The 40s are seen here having taken over the return leg during a 25 minute long photo stop, hence the hordes lined up on the trolley crossing.
