Chaparral Penstemon (Penstemon heterophyllus, Plantaginaceae)

            Here are new flowers of Chaparral Penstemon (Penstemon heterophyllus) in Plantaginaceae plant family that I've found this year.  (It's another of those plants that was moved from the Scrophulariaceae.)  You can see most of its four real stamens above, and the non-fertile "staminode" at the bottom - which sticks out like a Rolling Stones tongue.  That's the mysterious "fifth stamen" - which gives this "pen-stamen" family it's name.  The flowers are beautiful and look blue when you see them, though they do an odd color shift when you try to photograph them, and end up looking more magenta.  Another plant that does this is Spreading Larkspur (Delphinium patens, Ranunculaceae). Is it maybe something to do with UV light?  Last year I found these flowers in mid-April, but they're just starting to flower this year a month later.  (Near Arroyo Burro Saddle, Santa Ynez Mountains, 19 May 2017)
