RD25817vs. Replica Pickering brake third No.8.

            RD25817vs.  100 years ago, on the 1st June, 1923, the 2 foot gauge Welsh Highland Railway reached Portmadoc (now Porthmadog) and joined up with the Festiniog Railway (spelt with only one F in those days) at the Harbour Station. The present day Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways organisation, in collaboration with the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway,  celebrated this event with a gala 100 years later over the weekend 23rd to 25th June, 2023. 

The first train of the gala was a re-run of the pre-opening inspection train using the Motor Rail Simplex 4-wheel petrol tractor and two carriages which ran as far as Pont Croesor where this picture of the splendid replica Pickering brake third was taken.  

Two of these vehicles were built for the North Wales Narrow Gauge Railways, forerunner to the Welsh Highland Railway, by R. Y. Pickering & Co. of Lanarkshire in Scotland in 1907.  They were actually brake composites as one of the Passenger compartments was first class.  

This replica carriage was built by the Ffestiniog Railway in 2021 at the Boston Lodge Works but is a brake third as what was the first class compartment in the original has been adapted to be a wheelchair accessible compartment.
