The end

The remains of an old pier, contorted by shifting sand, juts into a calm Lake Ontario. Gibraltar Point, Toronto Island, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

The origin of this decaying old structure has me curious. It's located at Gibraltar Point on the south-west side of Toronto Island, which was the original site of a fort that was built in the 1790s but destroyed during the invasion of Toronto by American forces in the War of 1812.

The rusty steel reinforced structure indicates it was built more recently than that though. A little more research uncovered evidence that it could be the remnants of the first Hanlan family home that was built at Gibraltar Point in 1862. A severe storm washed away the buildings in 1865 however, and the family then relocated to the north-west side of the island where they rebuilt. Later, in 1878, a hotel was established at that location by John Hanlan and soon after the area became known as Hanlan's Point. A Coney Island-type resort flourished there until the 1930s.

Edward "Ned" Hanlan, the most famous member of the Hanlan family, earned international recognition as a competitive rower and held numerous world records.

A baseball stadium was also located there - where, against the Toronto home team, a visiting Babe Ruth hit his first professional home run.

Times do change and, as one era ends, another begins. Today, the area just west of this pier is now better-known as Toronto's only "clothing-optional" beach.
