Concrete as Plastic Form - a photo on Flickriver

            The Hilton Washington, 1919 Connecticut Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C.  

Built in 1965 and designed by architect William Tabler, the Washington Hilton is nothing if not exuberant in its plastic form, something of a departure for an architect who usually designed boxy buildings.  His Statler Hotel in Dallas was a precursor to this design in certain respects, though several years earlier and not nearly as adventurous in form.  The hotel is possibly best known as the place where Ronald Reagan was shot by John Hinckley Jr. on the 30th of March, 1981.  The hotel is now owned by Magic Johnson and other investors who have recently given it a makeover.  Given its rigid security protocol and enormous ballrooms, the hotel is popular for major events. 

On another note, the site was to have been used by Frank Lloyd Wright for his ambitious Crystal Heights proposal in the late 1930s.  His plans were thwarted by an architectural establishment not yet ready for him or his ideas.  "Wright said that the trouble with Washington was that its architectural decisions were made "by a bunch of Beaux-Arts graduates and g--d-mn fairies". His words "  Wright rarely shielded his words and didn't care what anyone thought of him. Brilliance does not always guarantee decency.
