The acrobat capital - a photo on Flickriver

            "The Chiostro dei Benedettini (Benedictines' cloister) behind the Duomo of Monreale is a masterpiece of 12th century art with Arab-Norman pointed arches borne by 228 twin columns (four on each corner). It is one of the finest Italian cloisters now extant both for size and beauty of detail. All columns have Romanesque capitals, each distinctively and imaginatively carved. They are the work of five master craftsmen, assisted by several apprentices. 

The columns are alternately plain and decorated by bands of patterns in gold and colors, made of glass tesserae, arranged either spirally or vertically from end to end of each shaft. Many of the columns are also decorated with Arab style diaper work  — decorative treatment of a surface with a repeat pattern of squares (chequers), rectangles, or lozenges; some other columns are adorned with carved reliefs. 

The capitals depict biblical scenes, allegories, mythological scenes, quasi-heraldic elements, Arab warriors and Norman knights, as well as fauna and foliage motifs, no two being alike. Even the Classical subjects betray a certain inventiveness: the acanthus leaves of the Corinthian capitals, for example, appear ruffled by the wind. 

This capital features an acrobat: his position — with his weight supported by his arms, his back arched so that his feet rest on the back of his head  — recalls the Trinacria, the ancient symbol of Sicily."
