Towers of the Virgin Sunrise - a photo on Flickriver

            The Towers of the Virgin in Zion NP is a great mountainscape to shoot at sunrise. The sandstone monoliths light up even before the Sun peeks over the mountainous eastern horizon, and we had some cotton-candy clouds in the scene as well on this morning, which turned a pretty pink. When this formation gets direct sunlight, as it did  shortly after this shot was taken, the contrast gets harsh and all subtlety of hues is lost.

After doing some reading, I can now identify several of the named peaks in the Towers formation. The big guy on the left with the cap rock is West Temple. The snowy peak to its immediate right is The Sundial, and the prominent peak to The Sundial's right is The Witch Head. And my favorite, the flat peak to the right of center is the ghoulishly named Altar of Sacrifice, which has "red blood" running down its walls (caused by iron oxide in the rock).
