Au printemps 2009, l’administration communale d’Avelgem a mis sur pied une commission pour donner un nouvel avenir au site de l’église. Cette commission était composée de représentants de la commune d’Avelgem, de l’Agence flamande terrienne (VLM), de l’Agentschap voor Onroerend Erfgoed, du Vlaams Bouwmeester, de l’intercommunale Leiedal, du gebiedswerking provincie West-Vlaanderen et de quelques experts externes. Une fois les différents scénarios achevés, la commission a décidé qu’une transformation artistique de l’église serait la meilleure solution. Transformer l’église en œuvre d’art et ne pas la démolir permet de préserver la signification du site et même de lui donner une nouvelle valeur qui sera perçue par les habitants de Bossuit et les nombreux passants.
Parmi une liste d’une vingtaine d’artistes contemporains belges et étrangers ayant de l’expérience avec ce type de commande de grande envergure, cinq artistes ont été sélectionnés pour élaborer un projet, 3 étrangers et 2 Belges.

Finalement, l’artiste américaine Ellen Harvey a été choisie. Dans sa proposition, l’église est transformée en un monument sculptural mettant l’accent sur l’aspect spirituel du lieu et sur l’église/le cimetière en tant que mémoire du village.
