Gatekeeper Butterfly – Pyronia tithonus

             This is the female Gatekeeper butterfly and you are able to tell the difference when they are basking in the sun with the wings open, the male has distinctive bands on the forewings.  This butterfly is also known as the ‘Hedge Brown’ and its a lovely sight in the summer months to enjoy these insects, they enjoy being where there are flowers on shrubs, edges of fields and along hedgerows.  The eggs are laid singly usually under leaves where it is in the shade, the eggs are pale yellow when first laid but they soon develop brown patches and they even get darker as the larva in the egg develops which is around 2 to 3 weeks.  When the larva hatch they eat the eggshell and they feed on the softest parts of the plant during the day before they hibernate again and this goes on until eventually all the cycles are complete.
