Exploring North East Japan - a photo on Flickriver

            I've spent the last three days exploring snowy mountain villages right out of fairy tales. I've even been living in some of these old farmhouses, some of which have been converted to simple but warm ryokans. This one is in the North East of Japan in a town called Shirakawa-go. It's been a really fun and photo-fruitful trip so far...and I've done this one a little differently. Most of these places don't take reservations online, so I show up in a town I want to visit and spend a few hours wandering around asking if there is an inn, like I'm some kind of bard playing D&D. No one here speaks English, so there is a lot of hysterics as I play charades to indicate I need somewhere to sleep. But it all works out because Japanese people are so kind and point me to cozy ryokans. Most, of course, don't have wi-fi, but they do serve delicious and healthy dinners.
