Tulum: Base of the Pyramid - a photo on Flickriver

This is a view out onto the Caribbean from the base of El Castillo, the main temple of the Tulum complex.  From here you can see the azure waters and also admire the intricate stonework of the ancient building.

Tulum's ocean-front setting and easy access from the Cancun and Cozumel resort areas has made it one of Mexico's most popular Maya attractions.

Tulum stands on a bluff facing east towards the Caribbean Sea and because of this, is also known as Zama (The City of the Dawn). Tulm was a walled city, the walls surrounding the site served as defense against invasions. Access to both land and sea trade routes, made Tulm an important trade hub, especially for the obsidian trade.
