Rhingia campestris feeding on dead nettle

            Looking at this it's not at all clear what the long 'snout' of Rhingia brings to the party. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with reaching into flowers as the mouthparts extend from the base of the snout. Anybody happen to know what it's for?
