Sea Vixen F(AW) Mk. 2 - a photo on Flickriver

            The Sea Vixen represented a huge missed opportunity. Initially proposed in the late 1940s as a twin-engined night fighter for both RAF and RN, it was delayed because of a lack of available staff at de Havilland to pursue the engineering design. Hatfield were busy with the DH. 106 Comet. Instead, the Venom was proposed as a minimum-change derivative of the Vampire, and Glosters proposed the less complex and advanced Javelin for the RAF night fighter requirement.

The aircraft eventually entered service in 1958, although with effort it would have been a better option than either the Venom/Sea Venom and Javelin, which despite being outwardly simple, took years, and 8 marks of aircraft, to reach acceptable performance.
