Avro 698 Vulcan B Mk. 2 and DH 110 Sea Vixen F(AW) Mk. 2

            This formation is possibly unique and may never happen again. Both aircraft made their debuts as prototypes at the 1952 Farnborough Airshow, where both made history.

Roly Falk, Chief Test Pilot at Avro, took off and immediately slow-rolled the Vulcan over the runway, enthralling the crowds but giving the shareholders a laundry emergency.

Alas, John Derry, senior test pilot at de Havilland, along with numerous spectators, was killed when the DH 110 he was flying broke up in mid-air due to structural failure.

At this point, the UK Aeronautics industry was technologically in advance of the rest of the world, particularly in engine design.
