0903 Southsea Savoy - a photo on Flickriver

            ex Savoy Ballroom, Southsea. One of Southseas formerly iconic buildings, the Savoy Ballroom & Café was opened in July 1927. There were actually dance floors in three areas of the building, the main Ballroom capable of accommodating 1,000, complete with balcony to overlook the floor.  It was an immediate success, and lasted through until 1971, when it was converted to Nero's Nightclub, later 5th Avenue, and finally Time & Envy. The building was sold and demolished soon after this image was taken, to be replaced by retirement flats.
