Covent Garden 5338 - a photo on Flickriver

            Covent Garden, London. A busy tourist spot, the area is a dazzling display of lights in the run up to Christmas. The square today has its origins in the mid C17th when the Duke of Bedford commissioned Inigo Jones to design a fashionable new square. A fruit  & vegetable market grew up, but by the 1960s the area was too congested, and wholesale demolition and redevelopment was planned. Thankfully an outcry ensured that the plans were dropped in 1973 - though the fruit market did relocate - but it took several decades for the repurposing and restoration to be completed. The majority of the buildings on the right side of this image are Grade 2 or Grade 2* listed.
