Known as Star Fruit.Other names: Camerunga, Caramboleira, Caramboleiro. Carambola or starfruit, is the fruit of Averrhoa carambola, a species of tree native to the Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Mauritius and Seychelles. The fruit is popular throughout Southeast Asia, the South Pacific, Micronesia, and parts of East Asia. The tree is also cultivated throughout non-indigenous tropical areas. Careful with carambola if you are a kidney patient. It contains caramboxin, extremely toxic. 

Nombre común o vulgar: Carambola, Carambolo, Carambolos, Tamarindo chino, Tamarindo culí, Árbol del pepino, Carambolera, Carambolero
Familia botánica: Oxalidaceae.
Origen: parece que procede de Malasia (Camboya y Laos), aunque se ha introducido extensamente en regiones tropicales. Los países productores de esta fruta tropical son Malasia, Tailandia, Indonesia y Brasil.
Etimología: el género Averrhoa, al cual pertenece la carambola, debe su nombre al médico y filósofo musulmán Averroes y proviene del Oeste de India y fue rápidamente adoptado como vocablo por los marinos portugueses.
El árbol de la carambola es bastante atractivo y ornamental y alcanza una altura media de 10 metros. 
Aunque no parezca, la carambola también puede ser peligrosa a personas con problemas de riñones pues contiene una sustancia llamada caramboxina que es extremamente tóxica y puede llevar a la muerte.

Carambola of starfruit is de vrucht van Averrhoa carambola, een boomsoort afkomstig uit Indonesië, de Filippijnen, Maleisië, Vietnam, Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Mauritius en de Seychellen. De vrucht is populair in heel Zuidoost-Azië, de Stille Zuidzee, Micronesië en delen van Oost-Azië. De boom wordt ook gekweekt in niet-inheemse tropische gebieden. Wees voorzichtig met carambola als u een nierpatiënt bent. Het bevat caramboxine, uiterst giftig. 

A carambola se originou na Ásia, alguns dizem no Sri-Lanka. Hoje é muito comercializada nos EUA e Europa. É muito popular o suco e as geléias que se fazem dela. Muito difundida na América do Sul especialmente no Brasil e Colombia. Cuidado também com a toxicidade da substância caramboxina que pode ser fatal para pessoas com problemas nos rins. O nome foi consagrado por marinheiros portugueses em suas incursões pela Ásia nas épocas das Grandes Descobertas.
