Aerial View Chamelecón River and African Palm Plantations, San Pedro Sula, Honduras

            SN/NC: Elaeis Guineensis, Arecaceae Family

Arriving at the Airport of San Pedro Sula one can see huge palm plantations  (Elaeis Guineensis) know locally as PALMA AFRICANA which is used to extract all kind of vegetable oils which is for human use or industrial use.  Also used even as fuel.  Honduras has lots of these plantations which is a pity because usually monoculture weaken the soils.  Sorry about the effects of the windows reflex on the picture.  But in photography as in real life, you can't have it all all the time...

Como todas las especies de su género Elaeis posee un tronco (estipe) alto y único. Las inflorescencias se producen en las axilas de las hojas, éstas son grandes y de tipo pinnado compuesto, con folíolos que parten desde el raquis sobre dos planos regulares. Los folíolos son lanceolados.
Es una planta perenne, alcanzando más de 100 años, pero bajo cultivo solo se le permite llegar hasta los 25 años, que es cuando alcanza los 12 m de altura. En estado natural llega a superar los 40 metros.
Los frutos se agrupan en una fruticencia, una drupa, cubiertos con un tejido ceroso llamado exocarpio, una pulpa denominada mesocarpo y una estructura dura y redonda, en cuyo interior se aloja una almendra, denominada endocarpio, que es la que protege el embrión.
Los frutos que produce E. guineensis son frutos normales, aunque a veces produce frutos blancos caracterizados por no contener ni aceite, ni almendra, igualmente con poca frecuencia se producen algunos sin almendra denominados frutos partenocárpicos, pero son más comunes en E. oleifera o en el híbrido oleifera × guineensis. Plantações intermináveis de palma africana, ao redor do Rio Chamelecon, aterrissando no Aeroporto de San Pedro Sula.  Bem interessante.  Pena q estas monoculturas acaban estragando a fertilidade dos solos e afugentando muitas especies da fauna.  Honduras é um grande produtor de oleo de palma na América Central.
