Young Pineapple Flowers — v - a photo on Flickriver

            At the tip of each “branch” of the fruit, there appears a tiny, magenta-colored flower (florette?). The “branch” (I don’t know the proper term to describe the pointy-shaped growth emanating from the fruit, and there are many), holds a clue to the fruit’s development, which, unlike most other plants in which a single fruit matures from a single flower, ex., apple, orange, grapes, tomatoes, etc., there are MANY flowers on a single piña fruit. And when the fruit is cut open, reveals a softly fibrous exterior radiating laterally, outwardly from the center. The fruit’s core is a much more densely fibrous, less sweet, and less juicy flesh than the circumferentially fibrous fruit, which is exceedingly juicy and sweet.

Judging from its appearance, the plant itself must be a relative, or member of, the cactus family.
