Horseshoe Falls, Terryville CT - a photo on Flickriver

I am especially partial to this waterfall. When I was a kid the woods behind my house lead to this waterfall when my friends and I would have great adventures exploring the woods. In the winter we would ice skate on an area of the river that formed a pond above the waterfall and we would climb down these rocks to cool off in the river below in the summer. There are also railroad tracks that lead behind the waterfall that we would follow along, cross a bridge (very carefully, it was very scary and I often crawled on my knees lol) over the river and often we would follow it for several miles through a mile long train tunnel where more than once in the pitch black center of the tunnel bats dove at me. Absolutely true story, one day after one of our adventures through the mile long tunnel where my friend who was about 5 years older than I was and a young teen, and my brother who was my little shadow had to scale a bank on the opposing side then follow a country road back home a few miles we came upon an enormous UFO overhead at dusk. (This waterfall is on Canal street and the UFO was at the top of this hill on Canal street, on the corner of Allen Street that meets it at the top of the hill.) The thing was the size of a football field. With that said, I didn't really know the size of a football field then so now in hindsight I would say it was more likely the size of at least 2 maybe 3 football fields. It was just massive and we certainly could not miss it. It stood totally still in midair, with no sound. I have always said since this experience 'flying saucers' do not spin as popularly reported. The UFO had a band of lights that synchronized around the perimeter of the craft, as I recall it was 2 or 3 colors, red, blue and maybe yellow that blinked on and off and this gave the appearance that the craft spun. We stood and stared for a few minutes at what in my eyes as a child seemed like a city size aircraft hovering over the trees, then we tore off running home as fast as we could. It was a different time then when kids were allowed the freedom to explore & enjoy nature, instead of being parked in front of video games or endless cable tv channels and it could be argued with bats and a real life UFO experience we had all the scares and thrills of the movies. LOL

Later when I was in college, I rented a house that was next door and the property adjoined this waterfall so I would go to these rocks several times a week to read/study. As many people know college can be stressful so I was truly lucky to have this peaceful relaxing waterfall to escape to.

Last oh man do I ever go through tripods. Photography is out for me today. I scaled this waterfall yesterday to get shots from the top of the rocks (on the right side of the frame) and my tripod went over the edge of the waterfall. We just had flash floods & heavy rains so I didn't think it was a wise idea to risk the current of the river in the very small likelihood I would be able to recover my tripod :/
