국립민속박물관 國立民俗博物館 National Folk Museum of Korea

            The National Folk Museum of Korea, located on the grounds of Gyeongbok Palace deals with the everyday aspects of traditional Korean culture, in particular as it would have applied to the various social classes of the Joseon Dynasty.

This diorama shows a classroom at a Seodang (서당/書堂), a village school where nobility boys went to learn how to read and write. As the cultural elites decreed that only mastery of the complicated Chinese writing system would count as actual literacy, most commoners and women would never attend a seodang and would remain illiterate. Under the strict guidance of the headmaster, the boys, ranging between ages 6 and 15, practice proper penmanship and calligraphy in this diorama. The boy standing on the left is probably going through corporal punishment, as the trouser legs are rolled up to be hit by the headmaster's slender wooden stick.

Seodang curricula would have started with the recitation and memorizing of the Chinese poem, the Thousand Character Classic, then moved on to a few other classical Chinese texts. Those destined for higher education, and eventual civil service, would have gone on to the next level, seowon.
