Washington, DC Union Station in B & W - 1968

            I took this photo of Washington Union Station in Washington, DC sometime in 1968.  Rail passenger service had been in decline in the US for some years, and the station building reflected that decline. At the time it was built, this was the largest railway station in the world.

After serving as the National Visitor Center for a few years, the station building was sealed in 1981, and the possibility of demolition was considered.  The station was reopened in 1988 after a three year renovation that cost $160 million.
