Black Tor Copse, Dartmoor, Devon, UK

            You may have noticed I haven’t posted any new images since I got back from the Arctic. I’ve been out of action following a serious back injury at the start of August, a prolapsed disc in the lower spine. Unfortunately, this is the third recurrence of an old injury, and it seems I’ve accumulated a lot of damage going back many years. 

I haven’t shared this with you before now because, after all, this is a photo sharing platform. On the other hand, I’ve come to see many of you as ‘virtual’ friends. It’s been a dark and difficult few months. But now I’m through the worst of it and into recovery, this feels like the right time. The good news is I’m not going to need surgery. The bad news is I won’t be able to continue as before. 

The injury will take up to a year to heal and (much to my wife’s delight) they’ve put me on a strict diet and exercise plan. It’s likely to be months before I can carry a backpack, never mind all the way to Black Tor Copse, remastered here from my film archive. I’ll have to lighten the load significantly and have already begun the process of selling heavy, non-essential glass to fund the purchase of a lightly used Leica Q2 full-frame compact.

Something like the Q2 is obviously more limited than my Nikon system. But it’s much lighter and almost pocketable. This kind of simple, single lens mirrorless setup should allow me to continue doing what I love during my rehabilitation. The last few months have taught me this is no small thing.
