National Railway Museum 04 mar 22 - a photo on Flickriver

            The Southern Railway 'Q1' class was designed by Oliver Bulleid for wartime freight traffic on a railway that didn't normally handle much freight. Rather than build more of the mediocre 'Q' class 0-6-0 locomotives designed by his predecessor, Mr Bulleid designed the most powerful 0-6-0 locomotive possible with the same weight and basic dimensions. All frills were eliminated to minimise the use of war materials and save weight, resulting in a stark, functional design with a unique appearance. They were successful locomotives, lasting almost to the end of steam traction on the Southern Region in the 1960s.
