The Taming of the Shrew: Programmes and costume designs for New Shakespeare Company productions in 1964-5 and 1993

            The Taming of the Shrew is one of Shakespeare’s earliest comedies, most likely written at the beginning of the 1590s, although not appearing in print until the First Folio of 1623. This robust, energetic comedy has enjoyed enduring popularity: seven versions of the play appeared during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries; one of the earliest talking pictures, made in 1929 with silent movie star Mary Pickford, was a heavily adapted version of the play; and the 1953 Broadway musical based on the play, Kiss Me, Kate, continues to be produced to this day. 
Performed regularly as part of the New Shakespeare Company’s summer season at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, touring productions have also been taken to Asia and the Middle East.  The Shakespeare Institute Library holds extensive material relating to all these productions.
Although written in an age when women were legally subject to their father and then to their husband, the play’s themes of patriarchal dominance and female obedience no longer seem quite so suitable for comedy as they once were and can cause some disquiet among modern audiences.
