Topiary Buddha

            Seen at Ladew Topiary Gardens in Monkton, Maryland. The Gardens were created by Harvey S. Ladew (1887-1976). While visiting England in the 1920s, Ladew became enchanted with the art of topiary (the trimming and training of trees and shrubs into ornamental shapes.) In 1929 he purchased a farm and worked on restoring a dilapidated house on the property. In 1937 he turned his attention to the grounds and created a flower and topiary garden. Ladew was a self-taught gardener. The gardens he created are open to the public. This gardens and the manor house are on the National Register of Historic Places.
