Land of pale mountains - a photo on Flickriver

            Whisper the word Dolomites to me, and I am instantly transported to a magical land of towering snow-capped mountains, jagged peaks and ridges, lush green meadows, quaint mountain huts and idyllic villages. And sure enough, as I was processing these images of the Dolomites from my trip last year, all those memories came rushing back to me: memories of wandering in and around these eye-catching skyline of these pale blue mountains, where every turn bought in jaw-dropping new vistas and surprising new delights.

This was one such delight for me on my third day of hiking in the Dolomites. After having crossed a ridge, our trail meandered through this beautiful meadow with the distant ranges brought ever closer by the clear and crisp mountain air. And despite the seemingly untouched landscape all around, our lunch spot with a hearty meal was barely an hour away, replete with good food, good wine and a smorgasbord of (motor)bikers, hikers and tourists of all sorts.

It was this juxtaposition of the rugged landscape and the perfect amount of human civilization that still draws me to this land of pale mountains.
