“Return to the Lost Kingdom", 2018
Mixed media on paper, 44x64 cm
There was a place and a time where magic was possible, a kingdom whose coordinates we would not find on a map. That was a special place, where fantasy was the law and its enchanted forests were inhabited by fairies and elves, princes and princesses. That was the fiefdom of imagination in which we once lived, and that we only abandoned when we grew up, without being aware that, when crossing its boundaries, the spell was irremediably fading out. Although we wished it with all our efforts, we could never come back.
Shortly, the birthdays of my nephews will arrive. I see how they gain strength and height every day, the reflection of the passing of time that does not stop, urging me to enjoy some years that will not happen again. I would like to be a little guide for both of them and give them some principles, some values that will help them in the future when I will be gone, but also to be the memory of a past that they could remember with a sincere smile. And even though I know that is a lost game beforehand, I would like to warn them not to grow up, that getting older is a trap. Perhaps there is only a trick and it is none other that keeping the children we were inside. I wish them to treasure that look that sparkles with curiosity in the light of the extraordinary, no matter the years that pass by.
Hayao Miyazaki, the wizard of the animation, described that passage with an outstanding sensitivity in “My neighbor Totoro”. In this film, only Mei, the youngest of the family, is able to see the elves in the forest at the beginning, because she still keeps that unrepeatable light of childhood. But the movie also leaves the door open to what inexorably should come. In the final scene, Totoro sees Mei and Satsuki drifting apart, perhaps as a metaphor of what we always leave behind when we grow up: the world of fantasy.
I would like to think that, during our absence, the kingdom remains in silence, just as we leave it, waiting for its true kings to come back to the throne, to bloom a magic that sleeps. Maybe we have been waiting for this moment our whole life.
Let’s close our eyes. Let’s dream again, while we begin to retrace our steps.
