The iconic Erasmusbrug - a photo on Flickriver

The Erasmusbrug ("Erasmus Bridge") is a combined cable-stayed and bascule bridge, construction began in 1986 and was completed in 1996. It crosses the Nieuwe Maas in the centre of Rotterdam, connecting the north and south parts of this city, second largest in the Netherlands. The bridge was named in 1992 after Desiderius Erasmus, a prominent Christian Renaissance humanist also known as Erasmus of Rotterdam. The Erasmus Bridge is Rotterdam's most important landmark and is even part of the city's official logo.

The 802-metre-long (2,631 ft) bridge across the New Meuse was designed by Ben van Berkel and completed in 1996. The cable-stayed bridge section has a single 139-metre-high (456 ft) asymmetrical pale blue pylon with a prominent horizontal base, earning the bridge its nickname "The Swan".

The southernmost span of the bridge has an 89-metre-long (292 ft) bascule bridge for ships that cannot pass under the bridge. The bascule bridge is the largest and heaviest in Western Europe and has the largest panel of its type in the world.

After costing more than 165 million Euros to construct, the bridge was officially opened by Queen Beatrix on September 6, 1996.

Le pont Érasme (en néerlandais : Erasmusbrug) est un pont à haubans, situé dans la commune néerlandaise de Rotterdam, dans la province de Hollande-Méridionale. Il relie la rive nord et la rive sud de la nouvelle Meuse. Ce pont est ainsi nommé en l'honneur du philosophe humaniste Érasme, originaire de Rotterdam.

Le pont Érasme est situé au sud du Willemsbrug et enjambe la Nouvelle-Meuse, en reliant la rive nord-ouest de Rotterdam avec la pointe sud Kop van Zuid.

Le pont Érasme a été dessiné par Ben van Berkel et Caroline Bos, et achevé en 1996. Le pont de 802 m de long a un pylône asymétrique de 139 m de haut. La forme du pylône évoquant le cou d'un cygne lui vaut le surnom de De Zwaan. Le pont est composé d'une partie fixe et d'une partie mobile. La travée sud comporte un tablier à bascule de 89 m de long pour les bateaux trop importants pour passer sous le pont. Ce pont à bascule est l'un des plus grands d'Europe.

Le 6 septembre 1996, le pont a été inauguré par la reine Beatrix.
