STICK 'EM UP

            This old Bank of Tasmania building at Beaconsfield, opened in August, 1880, has lived many new lives since its time as a functioning bank, in the heady days of gold fever, which at the time was at a high pitch in the region. In July, 1884, the bank was subjected to a daring robbery, when the acting manager was waylaid by thieves as he took a stroll. They stole the keys from him and helped themselves to reputedly 
£2,500 in bank notes, cheques, gold and silver (coins) - and some alluvial gold. The daring act certainly caused a far-reaching ripple, with such a dramatic event becoming the topic of many a conversation, keeping town and country folk interested, and mining companies alarmed. A £100 reward was eventually offered for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators.
