This is a shot taken last year in early May in Upper Antelope Canyon. My neighbor, James, and I drove down to Monument Valley to catch the “Super Moon” rising behind the buttes. We had made a reservation for May 7th to shoot Upper Antelope Canyon months in advance on our return back home. You really need to book in advance to shoot this place. We had pulled into Page AZ the day before, and learned that Upper Antelope was closed for the day. Hundreds of people with reservations months, and even years in advance were denied access. One woman from Germany was in tears because that was the one day she had reserved.
The Native Americans who have permits to run tourists through the canyon felt that they were abusing the canyon, and upsetting their elders, so they closed the canyon and spent the entire day preying, and blessing Upper Antelope. I felt bad for all the people who planned this day to photograph, or visit the Canyon. I was grateful that we would have the opportunity the next day.
This was my second visit to this place looking for a little redemption. I didn’t even bring a tripod on my first visit, and my skills were severely lacking. We were the first group to enter the canyon, and our guides knew exactly which opening would cast light beams down to the minute. There was a strong wind blowing on this day, which made for some funky flying sand. Yes the guides through sand into the light beam to accentuate it.
I have had nothing to shoot lately, so I have been going back to my old images, and seeing if I missed any good ones. I felt this shot might be worth posting. I cropped out the top part of the image because it was totally clipped out by the sun. Other than that Nikorr 14-24mm @ F/10 @ ¼ sec -1.3EV
