Carn Euny Fogou, Sancreed, Penwith, Cornwall

            Although similar to souterrains found  in Northern Europe and Scotland, fogous are only found in Cornwall and are associated with Celtic Iron Age courtyard house settlements. These stone structures usually consist of a curved underground passageway sealed both ends with a narrow side passage called a creep which slopes upwards to ground level and was the original entrance. Until recently the mainstream accepted theory of their use was for a refuge or food storage, but it is now thought they were for ceremony or ritual.

The fogou at the Carn Euny Courtyard House settlement was constructed about 300-500 BC and was attached to a corbelled Beehive Hut which dates from about 500 BC.  The hut has a chamber 4.6m in diameter and 2.4m high with a small recess in the back wall opposite the entrance which is positioned to face sunrise on the Midwinter solstice. The fogou is 20m long and 1.8m high. with a creep passage at the southern end. It originally had a paved floor with drainage channels and although both ends are now open they were sealed when it was constructed. 
The settlement was abandoned about 400AD and it appears the fogou was deliberately filled with earth. It was rediscovered by miners in the 1840s and excavated in the 1860s with a full excavation between 1964 and 1972. In the 1990s English Heritage constructed an artificial roof on the Beehive Hut for health and safety reasons but it is not known if it was originally roofed.
