Portrait of Livia from Paestum - a photo on Flickriver

            Detail of a seated image of the empress Livia, here probably as the widow of  Augustus (d. 14 CE), Rome's first emperor.  After the emperor's death Livia Augusta served as a priestess of the cult of the deified Augustus.  Here she wears the veil of a priestess.  Discovered along with a statue of her son Tiberius at the site of Paestum in Italy.
Now in the archaeological museum, Madrid.
Dated to ca. 14-19 CE.
