A St. George on horseback, from the Adoration of the Kings, by the Master of the Antwerp Adoration, painted around 1519.

The triptych is made in the Antwerp Mannerists' style typical of the first three decades of the 16th century, a reaction to the 'classic' style of the earlier Flemish painters.
It was characterized by an artificial elegance, elongated figures in twisting postures, colorful ornate costumes (in a combination of contemporary and fanciful dress), fluttering drapery, Italianate architecture decorated with grotesque ornament, and crowded groups of figures.
The American art historian Joseph Koerner notes "a diffuse sense of outlandishness in Antwerp art, of an exoticism both of subject and means ... evoking a non-localized elsewhere".
At this time Antwerp was starting to become the metropolis of European trade in the Low Countries, surpassing Flemish Bruges.

Overall St. George's armour is depicted in the contemporary style (the sayon skirt with a breastplate worn over it, haute-piece pauldrons with short mail sleeves worn under them, the horse trappings etc), while many details are in a fanciful/earlier/artificial style (the pointed sabatons/demi greaves/gauntlet cuffs and a helmet which is neither a close-helmet nor a sallet).
