St Hugh's Choir and the High Altar, Lincoln Cathedral

An alternative version of St Hugh's Choir and the High Altar at Lincoln Cathedral. This photo was produced from a spherical panorama created by taking 9 shots with a fisheye lens and stitching them together to form a 188 MP image that covers the entire 360˚ view, from floor to ceiling. The tripod is removed from the image by taking two 'straight down' shots from slightly different positions, using a dedicated spherical panoramic head that can offset the camera position away from the central axis of the tripod. Each frame was taken with 5 exposures to capture the full dynamic range from the bright windows to the dark corners (so 45 shots in total). The spherical panorama was transformed to the 2D square you see here using stereographic projection.

St Hugh's Choir is a church within a church - one of the oldest parts of the building. Construction of the cathedral started in 1072 and continued in several phases throughout the High Middle Ages. It is the fourth largest cathedral in the UK (in floor area) at around 5,000 square metres (54,000 sq ft), after Liverpool, London St Paul's and York Minster. Like many of the medieval cathedrals of England it was built in the Early Gothic style.

One major architectural feature of Lincoln Cathedral is the range of spectacular vaults. There are several different kinds of vaults that differ between the nave, aisles, choir, and chapels. Saint Hugh's Choir exhibits extremely unusual 'crazy' vaults - shown in this photo just below-right of centre. It is a series of asymmetrical ribs that appear to almost be a diagonal line created by two ribs on one side translating into only a single rib on the other side of the vault. This pattern divides up the space of the vaults and bays, perfectly placing the emphasis on the bays. Each separate area of Lincoln Cathedral can be identified solely by the different vaults of the space.

At the bottom of the photo, just left of centre, is the cathedra - the Bishop's throne - which is the seat of the Bishop of Lincoln. A church becomes a cathedral when the Bishop's official cathedra is installed.
