The Green Island Bridge - Troy, NY - a photo on Flickriver

            The Green Island Bridge crosses the Hudson River at Troy, NY connecting it with Green Island, NY. The original bridge was wooden. In 1862 that bridge caught fire and collapsed into the river. Floating, burning sections of the bridge incinerated steamboats and other ships in its path along the Hudson River and the fire also spread to the city of Troy, destroying more than 500 buildings. A second wooden bridge replaced it, and that one was later replaced by a steel bridge. On March 15, 1977 heavy rains, combined with damaging ice floes from the north, undermined that bridge's supports, causing it too to collapse into the river. Workers at the nearby New York Telephone Company office realized that there was trouble with the bridge and managed to close it just before the collapse, and as a result nobody was injured or killed.  The current Green Island Bridge is the replacement for the one that collapsed in 1977.
