Roof fall

            North Yorkshire, out past Pateley Bridge was once a narrow guage railway, winding it's way through the villages, across the streams and the fields and up the inclines towards the reserviors that supplied the city of Bradford. This is the Nidd valley, a steep climb up towards Scar House reservior. The remains of the concrete foundations are all that remain of the houses that once housed the workers up here, but it's not them that I'm here to see. For, hidden in the undergrowth is this,
a winding, steep rail tunnel that, at 180 yards was crudely hacked and blasted out of the rock. The incline of the tunnel was clear to see. Originally four locomotives would have been used to get up through the valley - two at the front of the train, and two at the back.
Rocks were strewn where the trackbed had once been, and although much of the tunnel was fairly dry, the incessant dripping of water could be heard. There were no airshafts, and no refuges.
