Roman Vindolanda, Hadrian's Wall, Northumberland, England, 12 July 2014, P137

            Vindolanda was a Roman auxiliary fort south of Hadrian's Wall and is regarded by some as one of Europe's most important Roman archeological sites.  The garrison guarded Stanegate, the Roman road from the River Tyne to the Solway Firth. The garrison was made up of  auxiliary infantry or cavalry units, rather than components of Roman Legions.
