            Where theres smoke, theres fire.  While driving home from moms house today after completing my taxes, I saw a large plume of smoke in the distant horizon to the North: Unfortunately there wasnt much of a worry, meaning no sirens or emergency vehicles zooming past me on the beltline.  Curiousity took hold, and I took the next exit (Airport Rd) and rolled the windows down with the hope of smelling the scents of burning brush and soil.  I almost felt like a dog, with my head halfway out the window my ears were flapping in the wind; not really but its something I can imagine.

The speed limit realy varies on where you are driving in Wisconsin, the country roads near residential areas are no exception to that rule:  Doing about 50mph (in a 45mph zone), I probly would have been perfectly fine but as I rounded a corner I saw a Dane County Sheriffs Deputy sitting in his squad car intently watching me.  I was nervous, with little time to slow down I flipped on my blinker and turned sharply into the winding driveway where officer friendly was perched.  Slowing myself at the end of a driveway to a house Id never seen before, I crawled back up and around til I found myself next to the squad.  Rolling down my window, not exactly sure what words would come spewing out of my mouth he spoke first: "Hows it going today?"

Sheepishly, I responded back "Great thanks, they say where theres smoke, theres fire.  I see smoke, but cant find the fire: can you be of any assistance?"

He put a call in to dispatch to find out for me, I explained to him who I was and why I wanted to find the fire so badly.  Over the course of 20 minutes of idling and trying to find a location, he gave me the general location of where he believed it to be (turns out the other officer was on a 911 call).  I thanked him for his time, and was on my way with no true sense for where this fire was obviously watching my speed as I rounded many a corner.  Eventually the smoke clouds grew larger, and the scent grew stronger: I could tell I was getting closer.  The air around me was thickening of smoke, and I could feel heat waves coming over my vehicle.  Everytime I made a turn, I put either left or right in my phone: So I would be able to find my way home after the excursion.

I found the fire, parked at the bottum of the hill passed all the smoke and flames so I didnt turn my car into a toasted Toyota and started to stroll up the hill.  Snapping pictures with no true idea of what my take would be, journalistism or artistic were the main things on my mind.  Eventually as I was leaving I kneeled down with my 50mm as one of the firefigters came in my direction while spraying out wild flames.  I felt very warm sensation on legs, and looked over my shoulder only to find that there was fire within one foot of where I was kneeling.  Close enough for me to be done, and thus bring you the viewer this POD.
