Louder Than Necessary?

This was the last board I built back when Fool was doing amps. It was for a split-cathode, tube-rectified JTM50 idea I had. I never went ahead and built the amp because I had a falling out with my partner at the time and changed direction to selling guitars instead of amps.

He was the smart one with the engineering background. I was mostly just doing cabinetry and a lot of engine-turning on control panels. Or that was the plan originally, but I ended up having to rebuild a lot of stuff and started getting kind of petulant about what I wanted out of the amps.

He had some health issues and a sick father to worry about and we just seemed to be getting on each other's nerves, so I decided to change the direction of Fool to something I was more comfortable overseeing on my own. Because I'd been working on guitars for people forever. Amps, not so much.

Anyway, I just shelved this at the time. A couple of weeks ago I got a letter saying I'd won a contest for parts credit from one of my vendors. I thought it was a scam and set it aside. Turns out my wife entered every freakin' contest at the guitar show and I really do have some credit at one of my vendors. I also have a free subscription to Vintage Guitar magazine that I'd been wondering about. I'm all, "Why am I getting this?" Because I married April. Heh...

So now I'm thinking maybe I should finish this build...if I can. My brain hasn't exactly been at the top of its game this year. I'd really like to see if I can make this work, though. I've got it in my head that this circuit, the way I have it laid out, will make me very happy. Of course, that's probably half the reason I didn't finish it; you never want to find out that you're wrong about stuff like this. Heh...might as well see what it can teach me, anyway.

BTW, my soldering is WAY better these days. Five years of working with a soldering iron all the time has improved my game a lot. I look at stuff like this and I'm all, "Oh, who did that?" I may have to touch it up here and there.
