Each class 185 vehicle is powered by a Cummins QSK19-R engine through a Voith 3 speed hydrodynamic transmission powering both axles on one bogie with the other bogie un-powered. The class 185 units are designed for quick acceleration and fast hill climbing and provide an improved service to the class 158 units they replaced due to the higher acceleration afforded by twice the power (2250 bhp versus 1050 bhp) compared to a three car class 158 unit.
